Marcus Rayner Celebrates 10 Years at Design Unlimited

It’s been 10 years since Design Unlimited welcomed Marcus Rayner to the team.  A decade later, Marcus is a lead designer for the studio and has worked on an enormous variety of projects.

“I still enjoy the challenge of interpreting a client’s brief and delivering a design that meets their needs,” says Marcus. “Each project is different, each is an unknown, and it’s exciting – you never know where the design journey is going to go and every day in the studio is different.  New thoughts, new challenges – it keeps me on my toes!”

Marcus cites the creative process as being the greatest motivator for him, and embraces the opportunity to achieve something not been done before.  “The core skills of design and the process largely remain the same – sketching, presentation, problem solving.  It’s a creative thought process from start to finish, and it’s the foundations of what we do.”

Marcus remains inspired by the freedom associated with yachting and strives to apply that ethos to his work.  “Sharing in the client’s passion and aspiration for what the yacht will bring to their lifestyle is incredibly inspiring, and delivering their vision is hugely rewarding.  The variety of projects we work on as a studio never ceases to amaze me.”

Over the last 10 years, Marcus has seen the studio grow in both size and capability, and as a designer he’s taken advantage of huge software developments during this period.  “Design Unlimited have invested in the latest technology and the tools we have available to us for design work are extremely advanced.”

Looking to the next 10 years, Marcus thinks further technological advancements are what will have the biggest impact on the marine industry.  “Everything is heading towards improved efficiency, greater sustainability, and it’s amazing – it’s all steps in the right direction towards making yachting a more sustainable pastime.  That allure, that connection with the water though, that’ll never change!”

The team at Design Unlimited have a varied skillset and array of specialisms, with each project requiring team input in different ways.  “I consider it a privilege to have such talented colleagues, and we really do work as a team,” adds Marcus.  “We have designers at the start of their careers, full of ambition to push the boundaries, and more experienced team members who can complement that with a more practical implementation.  What results is a perfect balance.”
